Some thoughts
Arsenal 0 - Brighton 3

I had a tough time figuring out what to draw for this week. It was hard to come up with something that expressed the finality of yesterday, but also the joy that this season brought.

Yesterday was more or less the proverbial nail in the coffin. Something, I think I had come to terms with after the Southampton match. It’s still mathematically possible of course, but City are looking more like a robot than they are anything resembling humans. And thus, here we are.

I think when I look back at this season, I’ll remember the joy. The chaos of the Bournemouth win. The last-minute winner against Manchester United. The time that Mikel Arteta had to run after Granit Xhaka to stop him from fighting the entire Tottenham Stadium. The match where Emi Martinez scored a goal for Arsenal with a diving header.

Most importantly, I’ll remember falling in love with Arsenal again.

Around the start of the pandemic, Arsenal felt like a chore to watch. And for me specifically, having a drawing blog about Arsenal, at times it felt impossible to figure out what to draw when your team is finishing outside of a European spot for the first time in 26 years. I felt disconnected.

Last year felt different. It was fun to watch again. You could tell that the club was headed in the right direction.

But this year. This year made me believe. I felt connected to the club. The fans felt connected to each other. The club felt connected to the fans. Arsenal felt like Arsenal.

So while we probably overachieved, and we have a young squad that probably fell apart at the end, and we have injuries we couldn’t cope with, and we have a thin squad, and Man City is insane and this hurts now and and and. I’ll try to remember the joy.

This a new section for the rest of this season. At the end of each week, I will create a post in the subscriber chat asking for pictures of your pets and I’ll select one to draw.
